Proto Punk is a term to describe rock bands with punk-like characteristics that emerged in the 60s and the early to mid-70s. Proto punk refers to bands that didn't fit the counter culture, base off the performance and the way bands played, often loud and energetic. Garage rock bands are labeled as Proto punk, bands like The Stooges and the MC5, along with glam rock bands such as New York Dolls and Hollywood Brats. The earliest example of proto punk can be traced back to 1950s Rock n Roll, artist such as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard.
