New wave is a music genre and was popular in the late 1970s and the early and mid 1980s. New wave moved away from the traditional blues and rock and roll and incorporated pop, disco, mod, and electronic music. New wave was similar to punk rock before becoming a distinct genre, new wave also differs from other movements with ties to first wave of punk as it displays characteristics of pop music, rather than the " artsy" Post Punk. The common use of instruments of new wave is the synthesizer and electronic productions and distinctive visual style featured in music videos and fashion.
New wave has been called one of the definitive genres of the 1980s, after it was promoted by MTV's first music video " Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles.
